Edgewater Glen isn’t just a neighborhood — it’s home to an incredible variety of native wildlife.

Our backyards, parkways, and alleys are alive with pollinators, beneficial insects, and birds that make our urban ecosystem thrive.

This blog began with a group of neighbors in Edgewater Glen, Chicago, who share a love for the wildlife right outside our doors. Through photography, we capture local sightings to celebrate the rich biodiversity already here — and inspire planting native species to help it thrive even more.

Why We Focus on Native Plants

Native plants are the foundation of a healthy ecosystem. They provide nectar, pollen, seeds, and shelter that local wildlife depends on — resources non‑native ornamentals rarely match. When neighbors plant native species, we create green corridors that:

  • Feed pollinators like bees, butterflies, and moths

  • Provide nesting and foraging spots for birds

  • Help beneficial insects control pests naturally

  • Reduce water use and eliminate the need for chemicals

  • Reconnect us to the natural heritage of the Chicago region

Our Goal

By sharing these images, we hope to inspire a community‑wide movement to make Edgewater Glen a haven for native wildlife. Every yard, parkway, and balcony can play a role in restoring habitat and supporting biodiversity.
